Beware of Your Bias (TV)

January 21, 2018

We are constantly receiving information that reinforces what we already think, but not only are we receiving it, we're also looking for it. We retweet/share things that we agree with, we scroll right by the things we don't. It's not hard for Twitter and Facebook to figure out what we like and don't like.

I watched the Obama/Letterman special on Netflix, and it's something that everyone needs to watch. I could have written an article on every single thing the two of them discussed, however, social media is a big part of what I do, so that's what I chose to run with.

"If you are getting all your information off algorithms being sent through a phone, and it is just reinforcing whatever biases you have, which is the pattern that develops......That's what's happening with these Facebook pages, where more and more people are getting their news from. At a certain point, you just live in a bubble. And that's part of why our politics is so polarized right now." - Barack Obama

I compare it to how the radio stations on Pandora work. We thumb up the songs and artists that we like and then we start to hear more of that style of music. On social media we will see "suggested friends", "who to follow" and "things you might like" all based on the interests that we already have. This is exactly how news gets shared on our timeline as well.

If someone continually shares things that we don't agree with we tend to unfollow that person and completely cut off that perspective. Social media pulls us to the ones that think the exact same way that we do. They want us to enjoy our experience by making sure we are interacting with as many like-minded peers as possible.

Whether you're watching TV or scrolling through your timeline, beware of whatever biases you may have. Beware of whether or not something is simply reinforcing what you already believe or if you're looking to gain more perspective on what may be a polarizing topic.

When I started through2eyes.com, it was for that exact reason, to see the world through two eyes, my eyes and yours, through two eyes, opening BOTH of my eyes in order to gain a better view.
