The Dangers of Western Medicine

January 19, 2018

There seems to be a pill for everything these days, doesn’t there?  Headache?  Bam. Flu-like systems?  Boom.  Feeling down?  Have no fear.  The pharmaceutical industry is a kingpin when it comes to profits; Pfizer, the leader of the industry, increased profits to $54 billion in 2017 (CNBC).  The pharmaceutical industry is booming because everyone wants a quick fix to their problems.  Quick fixes are great, but prolonged usage of prescription pills can lead to serious organ complications.

“While effective and a more than appropriate treatment approach, antidepressants and mood stabilizers can cause a tremendous amount of damage to a person’s organs the longer they’re taken” (FSU News).  You know how at the end of pharmaceutical commercials they talk really fast about the possible side-effects?

It’s important to know the possible consequences of using pharmaceuticals to deal with our health problems. This topic is important to me because it really hits home.  My mom had been going to the same doctor for a while.  As soon as she would mention any new discomfort in her life, the doctor would prescribe a new pill for her to take.  It got so out of hand that at one point she was on eight different medications.  EIGHT!  How can a doctor truly believe that putting eight foreign substances into your body daily would cause better health?

She recently switched doctors and by simply changing a couple habits is down to two prescriptions, and should be down to none in no time.  She claims she hasn’t felt this good in a long time.  Being prescribed many pharmaceuticals is bad, but the worst form present in our society is the recreational consumption of prescription pills.

If you haven’t seen it before, you either haven’t noticed or are living under a rock. Opioids (OxyCotin, codeine, heroin, etc.) and depressants (Xanax, Valium, etc.) are currently being taken recreationally more than ever.

Most of my friends were abusing Xanax when I was 19 years old.  One of them became so addicted that he quit playing football and pretended to a doctor that he was suffering from anxiety just so he could be prescribed Xanax.  A group of four kids from my high school died from a heroin overdose and a few more were hospitalized.  These are just some of my stories; I’m sure that most of the people reading this can think of some similar situations that they’ve witnessed in their lifetime.

Our society needs to find healthier ways to handle our problems.  There are a good amount of situations where pharmaceuticals are the answer, but we must be cautious of how much and what we are putting into our body.  As for the recreational consumption of prescription pills, that needs to end ASAP.

If you or a loved one are currently addicted, you’re not alone.  I’ve had to have the difficult conversation with friends before. Even though it isn’t easy, it could be the difference between life and death.

The number for the drug abuse hotline is 1-877-756-9804.
