Half of the Glass

College is an awesome experience in many ways. You get your first taste of independence, you have a chance to pursue the career of your dreams, and you get to meet people from all over the country. As a kid from St. Louis, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from California, Florida, and everywhere in-between. They’ve expanded my mind with different foods, music, and viewpoints. I treasure these friendships and hope to maintain contact with these people the rest of my life. If there’s one trait I hope they’ve taken from me, it’s having an optimistic perspective on life.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people my age are quite fond of complaining about the minor inconveniences of their lives. “Why can’t I have…” “It’s not fair that…” “It’s so freaking annoying when…” I respect the opinions of everyone I meet and understand that the hardships we face can be extremely taxing. However, the next time you are feeling negative about a subject, I want you to take a step back and as yourself a question: “is this that serious in the grand scheme of things?” I think that sometimes we get so caught up in what’s on our plate that we lose sight of the bigger picture.

It’s so much easier to polarize our problems instead of our blessings. I believe that we minimize some of the biggest blessings that we have in life. A family that loves you; friends that care about you; a roof over our head at night. Life is far too short to emphasize our problems and downplay our blessings. When you’re laying on your death bed, do you want to think back on all the moments you were negative, or do you want to reflect on as many joyous moments as possible?

Folks, we have a month left in 2017. I challenge whoever reads this to finish the year as a grand optimist who radiates as much positivity as possible. I’m confident that you will like how it feels and be ready to attack 2018 with your newfound outlook on life. Long story short: don’t view the glass as half empty, view the glass as half full.
